Interpreter, playwright, and actor Haruka Ueda self-interprets between Japanese and English for this bilingual one-person show.
In a near future where the rise of AI has eliminated arts-specialized interpretation work, an interpreter finds herself at the afterparty following her final gig, where she is assailed by memories of the past and anxieties from the future.
A cluster of themes emerges: her gratitude for a space that allowed her to exist in both Japanese and English; the social climate of people rejecting what they do not understand; the violent linguistic imperialism of English, a language she calls home. Turning the emotions and pain felt in her work as an interpreter into laughter, Ueda shares a record of a corporeal ritual—the vocation of interpretation that will soon disappear. If you have ever been at the whim of an inflated ego, or caught trapped in the world of meaning, this might hit closer to home than you think.

植田悠 Haruka Ueda
東京を拠点に活動する俳優・劇作家・日英通訳翻訳者。日本とアメリカを行き来しながら育ち、ボストン、ニューメキシコ、コネチカットで計12年間暮らす。言葉と肉体、日本語と英語の間を揺れ動きながら、身体や越境、タブーをテーマに生を肯定する言葉を紡ぐ。2021年に東京芸術祭ファームへの参加を機にアート専門通訳翻訳者として活動を開始。2025年よりArt Translators Collectiveメンバー。
Haruka Ueda is an actor, playwright, and interpreter/translator based in Tokyo. Moving back and forth between Japan and the United States, she spent a total of twelve years living in Boston, New Mexico, and Connecticut during her formative years. Wavering between language and the body, Japanese and English, she aims to be a vessel for life-affirming narratives that explore corporeality, border-crossing, and taboo. She began translating and interpreting in the arts after gaining experience at the Tokyo Festival Farm in 2021. A member of Art Translators Collective since 2025.
三浦雨林 Ulin Miula
演出家、劇作家、写真家。利賀演劇人コンクール2016 観客賞受賞。近年は生身の俳優が出演しない空間演劇やインスタレーション作品など、舞台芸術の枠に捉われずに演劇的手法を用いた作品を多数制作。
Director, playwright, and photographer. Winner of the Audience Award at the Toga Theatre Director Competition 2016. In recent years, she has expanded beyond traditional performing arts to create numerous works utilizing theatrical methods, including space-theatre and installations that feature no live actors.
